Joyful Rain

I really, really don’t like rainstorms…

Joyful Rain by Karissa Cole 2014

but I can still appreciate that they’ve got their upside.

These sweet little splashes of colors were a nice diversion from an otherwise grey day :)

I have absolutely no idea -or at least not much of one- as far as what these flowers are called. But the yellowish one, on the left there, was huge and completely gorgeous. There were only two of them that managed to survive through the incredibly brutal rain that mercilessly pounded and pummeled everything in its path all day long. But I’m really glad they made it. I didn’t even know these flowers were in bloom until I stumbled upon them today completely by accident. I was in love when I saw them. Honestly, this one yellow spurt of sunshine was probably about the size of my head. I guess I should’ve done a longshot or something for a size comparison. But, then, my photographic skills aren’t nearly refined enough to even capture little upclose goodness, let alone full shots. Still, I’m pretty please to have captured a look at these lovelies. I can save them to look back at whenever I may need.

More garden-themed photos, as promised. Well, I pretty much just promised myself. But if you can’t keep your own word to yourself then I think you’re pretty much hopeless. Of course that’s besides the point. And I do have one. A point, I mean. Well, it’s not really a point, per se. Actually, it’s really more rounded, not very point-like at all. Too bad, too. If it weren’t so round maybe it wouldn’t have gotten away from me so easily…

So this flower-photographing has really become a habit of mine. These photos represent my little excursions from the past two days. For the most part I quite like these particular pictures. I can’t help but feel like something is lacking, though. There’s a little voice that says to me. “if they’re all good that means none of them are; they could be so much better than this.” This little voice crops up a lot in my life, I’ve noticed. I think it’s about time I silence it and just enjoy what I enjoy.

:D

a Rose by Any Other Name

Today was a day that slipped through the cracks, and my plans along with it. It made me think of the saying “The best laid plans of mice and men often come to a terrible end.” I guess that’s not typically the way it goes, but I know I’ve heard it that way before. In any case I’d have to say this phrase fits into my life pretty well these days. Not that I mean to complain. But, suffice to say more than a few of my important plans of late have fallen through a bit.

Thankfully today’s goings-on weren’t of the utmost importance, so the fact that I wasn’t able to carry them out isn’t too much of a letdown. And even though I didn’t get the opportunity to do what I had wanted on this day off of mine, I did get the chance to take some photos of the roses that just bloomed. It’s been raining here for the past week, with no signs of letting up, but, rainy pictures are better than nothing, I thought.

I wonder if the roses feel sad too, because of all the rain. I miss the sun.

Drink Me, Drown Your Sorrows

Did you know Daft Punk is coming out with a new album, Random Access Memories, May 21st? This information just recently reached my ears, and I found it quite delightful. So much so, in fact, that I cannot stop listening to the teaser ads that are floating around YouTube. Actually, it’s the looped songs I keep playing, in anticipation of this long-awaited new album. I’m liking it.

Oh, and also, I took some pictures of some fruit today.

They were all very obliging pieces of fruit. I haven’t seen such pleasant, bright colors in a while. I placed them in a rectangular glass vase full of a lemon-lime soda and took about a hundred photos.

I should have waited until daytime, so I could make use of some natural light. But, to be honest, I am extremely impatient. Despite this, though, some of them came out pretty neat.

Incidentally, I just realized, grapefruit and grapes look nothing alike.

So I’ve been thinking about this kind of shoot for a little while (about 3 years or so), and, well, today seemed just right to go ahead and give it a try.

I have to say, I feel pretty good about this considering it’s a first attempt. I think I learned a a bit about blurring and composition. Eventually I hope to reproduce this macro photography setup and put to good use what I learned from this session. Of course, I believe I promised a yeti story/pattern, so that’s probably what I really should be working on first. (To any wondering where the aforementioned yeti is, he’s coming, I promise! Was even working on it earlier today.)

Next time I do this, think I’ll use a tripod and some really shimmery paper as a backdrop, because, as I have discovered, one can’t really go wrong with shimmery paper.

Now I suppose I should go clean up the mess I made. In retrospect, I might’ve poured out a bit too much glitter. . .
